Why is Language Oppressive?!

In today’s society language is often taken for granted as people do not realize the impact it has on everyday life. It can greatly affect how one views others and how in return one is viewed. Specific words may not seem important by themselves, but once used in the inappropriate or appropriate context they may have a drastic effect. While the speaker’s purpose is to demean others with his harshness, in actuality his words make him look ignorant. This type of language has played an oppressive role in my social circles and effect’s my day-to-day activities.

Why do people feel the need to utilize repulsive language when communicating with other people? Is it a source of comfort to them? Superiority? When people exploit obscene language it has the ability to cut people down. It makes them feel worthless, degraded, and upset. Do people not understand that it has a drastic effect on people’s lives? Parents go around cursing here and there in the presence of their children, not knowing that in the future their children will follow in their footsteps. I notice some of my younger friends exposed to this profanity by their parents. They first catch on to a couple words not even realizing that it quickly begins to emulate their vulgarities.

People who utilize this obscene language tend to use it because they think it sounds “cool”, or it makes them feel “big and tough.” Only a fool would do that. And then there are some people who do not even use it in the right context. I mean if you are going to use profanity, use it in the right way and not go blurting out stuff that does not even make sense or go together. People who cannot construct sentences without the use of expletives need to bone up and re-read “The Little, Brown Essential Handbook.”

Does our society realize the harm that is done by the vulgarization of our language? If not it should! Our culture is being corrupted in all of its facets. It seems to me that our society is getting lazier by the minute and we evade all the proper language we have been brought up with. With more use of this obscene language it starts to lower our standards. And we begin to lose our modern English language. Has our society recognized that they are provoking a negative message to its people? Our society delivers obscene language throughout different sources. Some would include movies, music, and video games.

Movies are a prime culprit. They play an important role displaying this vulgar language because so many people watch these movies that it begins to embed in their mind. Then it convinces the audience to think that it’s “okay” to say these words. It is hard to find a movie out there not rated R for “Raunchy.” How embarrassing is it when you have those family nights at the movies and those “dirty words” are recklessly tossed about.

Music is another one of the usual suspects. While demeaning women, the rapper’s fling the “F word” around like handing candies out to children. These so called artists spend a great amount of time to find a rhyme for “Bitch” or any other smutty word. Most of the songs out there are “F@*# this and F@*# that”, what is even the point of a song if it says that.

Now we should not forget those video games. Purposively made for children, are filled with “potty language.” Okay just think if a child is playing a non-rated video game that has a great amount of profanity exposed, they are going to start building up their vocabulary with those words. These video game designers should have their mommies wash their mouth out with soap.

Why do people have the audacity to demean other people? Does it make them feel better about themselves? Or are people just flat out ignorant? It could either be about their appearance, religion, or race, it does not matter people find a way to antagonize innocent people. I do not understand how certain races can make fun of their own, but if another person makes fun of them they get all offended. People that make racial comments and use obscene language wound people’s feelings.

The use of obscene language tends too often becomes verbal abuse. This can quickly make enemies out of friends. Who would put their friendship on the line for something stupid like that?

And then there’s name calling which causes wounded feelings and emotions. I know someone who has experienced name calling and that is not the greatest way to be treated. And now this abuse is finally taking a bit hit on them in their later years.

Rancorous language has the affect of ruining relationships. Outrageous utterances can often incite violence. All of these situations revolve around social circles and it demeans both the victim and the perpetrator.

Any fool can see that vulgar language pokes its filthy finger in the eye of a friend, family, and society. This obscene language is the grit in our society that causes friction. Instead people need respect language like greasing the wheels.

this sounds a little angry to me.

The red font goes hand-in-hand with the anger in your essay. Good job!

Angry and some what questioning. I also see it being a little defensive as well.

The first paragraph sounds like a textbook formal essay, a bit dry. You could have changed the sentence rhythms and word choice a bit to reflect more of the anger idea.

Also, consider making the last sentence of the first paragraph more specific of a thesis statement, naming what it is you’re actually going to do.

You make the assumption that oppressive language is synonymous with repulsive/obscene language, but this is not the case at all – you have to argue for it.

Okay, this is actually funny: “People who cannot construct sentences without the use of expletives need to bone up and re-read “The Little, Brown Essential Handbook.””

“Most of the songs out there are “F@*# this and F@*# that”, what is even the point of a song if it says that” Watch the comma splice.

Gets a little bit five-paragraph like. In other words, you just start listing the culprits: music, video games, movies. This doesn’t allow for more complex rhetorical moves. And if you’re going to be angry, I don’t think anger comes across in such a neat one-two-three structure.

Starting many paragraphs with questions is a bold move, a nice attempt at style, but ultimately I think it backfires, because it sounds less angry. Answering those questions might have made you seem more certain and more angry.

Paragraph at the end get a bit too short – not enough space to develop your ideas, like these were the leftover paragraphs shunted towards the end.

Nice lively language in the final paragraph – grit, greasing, filthy. Very action-oriented anglo-saxon words.
